Sewage Backup Cleanup in Ottawa
Sewage backup is a removal job, not a drying job. Porous material the water reached comes out, the structure is cleaned and disinfected, and the whole scope is documented for the claim.
Dispatch — 24 hours
(613) 239-4728Answered at any hour, including through storm events. You are told a real attendance window on the call.
When this is what you have
- 1Water coming up through a basement floor drain.
- 2A toilet or laundry standpipe overflowing while nothing is running.
- 3Sewage odour in a basement after heavy rain or rapid melt.
- 4Multiple fixtures backing up at once, which points at the main.
- 5A backwater valve that has failed or was never installed.
- 6A lateral collapse or root intrusion between the house and the street.
- 7A multi-unit building where one stack backs into several suites.
- 8Any standing water in a basement that smells wrong, whatever it looks like.
How a sewage backup is handled
- 01
Stop use and isolate
Nothing goes down a drain in the building until the cause is known, because every flush adds to what is on the floor. Power to the affected area is isolated, and the space is closed off from the rest of the building so foot traffic does not carry contamination upstairs.
- 02
Classify it honestly
Sewage is category three water. That classification holds even when it looks clear, and it holds for water that mixed with sewage somewhere along the way. The reason it matters is that category three changes the rule from dry-and-keep to remove-and-replace, and getting that wrong is the most common serious error in this trade.
- 03
Extract and remove
Contaminated water extracted, then the porous material it reached comes out: carpet and underpad, batt insulation, affected drywall, particleboard, and saturated subfloor. These absorb — the contamination is inside them, not on them, so cleaning the face treats what you can see and leaves the rest.
- 04
Clean, then disinfect
Hard surfaces are cleaned first and disinfected second. That order is not a formality: disinfectant applied over organic soil is largely spent before it reaches anything, which is why a surface that was sprayed but not cleaned keeps smelling.
- 05
Address the odour at its source
Sewage odour comes from residue, not from air. It resolves when the contaminated material is gone and the affected substrate is cleaned or sealed. Fragrance over an untreated source buys a few days.
- 06
Dry, verify, and document
Once removal is complete, what remains is dried to a documented target with readings logged across the dry-down. You get the scope of what was removed, the disposal record, photo progress, and the verification — the file an insurer works from and a property manager can pass upward.
Why property managers and adjusters call HMRS
- Category three treated as category three
- Porous material the sewage reached comes out. Contractors who treat a backup as a drying file are the reason these jobs get done twice.
- Clean first, disinfect second
- Disinfectant over organic soil is spent before it works. The order is why a properly cleaned space stops smelling and a sprayed one does not.
- Documented disposal and scope
- A written record of what came out, how it was disposed, and what verification was done — for the insurer, the estate, or the property manager.
- 24/7 attendance in occupied buildings
- A backup in a lived-in basement or a tenanted suite is urgent. Dispatch is answered live at any hour.
Common questions
01Can any of it be cleaned and kept?
Hard, non-porous surfaces yes — concrete, tile, sealed hardwood, framing that is structurally sound. Porous material the sewage reached, no. Carpet, underpad, insulation, drywall, particleboard and saturated subfloor come out. This is the single most important decision on the job and it is the one most often got wrong, usually by a contractor treating a sewage backup as an ordinary drying file.
02Is sewage backup actually dangerous?
It carries bacteria, viruses and parasites, and the exposure risk is real for anyone cleaning it without proper protection. That is separate from the building damage. Keep people and pets out of the area, and do not run the HVAC, which will move contamination through the rest of the house.
03Why does it still smell after the water is gone?
Because residue is still somewhere the cleaning did not reach — inside a wall cavity, under a subfloor, in a floor drain, or absorbed into material that was cleaned only on its surface. Odour is a symptom of residue. Any treatment addressing the smell without removing the source is a delay.
04Does insurance cover sewer backup?
Usually only if sewer backup coverage is specifically on the policy — it is commonly a separate endorsement rather than part of standard water coverage, and plenty of policies do not carry it. Check the endorsement rather than assuming. Documentation of when it happened and what was done helps either way.
05What is a backwater valve and would it have helped?
A backwater valve is a one-way valve on the sanitary lateral that closes when flow tries to come back toward the house. It is the standard protection against municipal surcharge during heavy rain. Whether one would have prevented your specific backup depends on where the water came from — a valve does not help with a blockage on your own side of it. Installation is a plumbing job rather than ours, and it is worth asking a plumber about after the cleanup.
06Does the whole basement have to be gutted?
No. Removal follows the water — how far it spread, what it soaked, and what is porous. An unfinished basement with a concrete floor and no stored contents can be a comparatively contained job. A finished basement with carpet and framed walls is a much larger one, because the material that has to come out is the material that makes it finished.
07How fast do you need to be there?
Quickly. Contamination spreads with the water, absorbs further into material with time, and the odour sets. Dispatch is answered 24 hours a day, and a sewage backup in an occupied building is treated as urgent.
08Can you handle a multi-unit building?
Yes. Multi-unit losses are a large share of the work — one stack can back into several suites, and the scope has to be established per unit while the building stays occupied. Documentation is written so a property manager can pass it upward without rewriting it.
