Dispatch — 24 hours
(613) 239-4728Answered at any hour, including through storm events. You are told a real attendance window on the call.
Call now if
- 1There is standing water in an occupied space.
- 2A pipe has burst and the water is still running.
- 3Sewage has backed up through a drain or fixture.
- 4A fire has been extinguished and the building is open to weather.
- 5A trade has stopped work over suspected asbestos.
- 6A scene has been released and needs biohazard cleanup.
- 7A vacant unit has been found flooded.
- 8A building has to reopen and you do not yet know what is behind the wall.
What happens when you call
- 01
The call is answered by someone who can act on it
Not a franchise call centre creating a ticket for a local operator to pick up in the morning. HMRS is an Ottawa company and the dispatch line reaches it directly.
- 02
You get a real attendance window
Based on where the loss is, what is already running, and the conditions. In a widespread freeze or storm event, honest sequencing is more use to a property manager than an optimistic number that gets missed.
- 03
Make safe, then extract
Source stopped, power isolated where it needs to be, building secured if the envelope is open. Then extraction, because the first hours remove more water than the following days of air movement will.
- 04
Classify before anything is removed
Water category, and whether asbestos-containing material or mould is present in what has been opened. In a pre-1990 Ottawa building this decides whether the job is a drying file or a Type 2 or Type 3 operation under O. Reg. 278/05.
- 05
Stabilise and document
Containment and drying equipment set, and documentation started on day one — moisture readings, photographs, and scope. Documentation assembled after the fact is worth considerably less to a claim.
- 06
Scope for what comes next
A written scope for the full remediation and, where you want it, the reconstruction. You get told what the file is going to involve before the emergency phase closes rather than after.
Why property managers and adjusters call HMRS
- An Ottawa company answering its own phone
- Not a national call centre routing a ticket. Dan Pereira, President, is involved in scoping the work.
- Attendance windows you are told honestly
- Including during storm events, when the useful thing is a real sequence rather than a promise that will be missed.
- Hazmat capability on the first call
- An overnight discovery of asbestos-containing material does not become a referral and a week of delay. Classification and abatement run under the same contractor.
- Documentation starts on day one
- Moisture readings, photographs, and scope from the first attendance, because a file assembled afterwards is worth less to a claim.
Common questions
01What do I do before anyone arrives?
Shut the water off at the source or the main. Kill power to the affected area at the panel if water is anywhere near outlets or equipment, and do not walk into standing water unless you know the power is off. Photograph everything before it is moved. Move what you can lift clear of the water. Then leave it — pulling up flooring or opening walls before the scope is documented makes the claim harder, not easier.
02Are you actually available overnight and on holidays?
Yes. Losses in occupied buildings do not respect business hours, and a trade opening a wall at 11pm is a normal case rather than an exception.
03Do you serve Gatineau as well as Ottawa?
Yes. The service area covers Ottawa, Gatineau, Kanata, Nepean, Barrhaven, Orleans, Stittsville, Gloucester, Vanier, and Eastern Ontario.
04Can you deal with several buildings at once?
Yes. Portfolio and multi-building response is scoped per building with reporting a property manager can pass upward. In a widespread event you will be told the sequence rather than told everything is a priority.
05Should I call my insurer or you first?
Call whoever stops the loss getting worse first — that is usually a plumber or us. Report to the insurer as soon as the immediate hazard is controlled. Emergency mitigation to prevent further damage is generally expected of a policyholder rather than penalised, but confirm with your insurer and document what you did.
06What does the first attendance cost?
You get a scope and a figure before work beyond making safe begins. HMRS does not start a full remediation on an open-ended basis and then present a number at the end.
07Will you work with our existing trades?
Yes, and that is the usual arrangement. Your mechanical trade fixes the mechanical failure. HMRS handles containment, removal, drying, documentation, and the handoff back to whoever rebuilds.
08What if it turns out to be asbestos?
Then the work is classified under section 12 of O. Reg. 278/05 and run at the required type, with Ministry of Labour notification where a Type 3 operation applies. HMRS does that work rather than stopping and referring you elsewhere, which is what keeps an overnight discovery from becoming a week of delay.
